About Us

Our Beginning

One conversation on a train.

Y-KNOT Inc. started on a Metro ride into D.C.

Founder Regina Gibbons was sitting near a group of girls, maybe ten years old, having a conversation that caught her attention. A few seats away, an older couple was listening too. At one point, she watched the woman grab her husband's arm in disbelief.

She had a choice: say something, or let the moment pass.

She chose to say something.

She spoke to those girls without knowing how they would respond. But she also knew that if we want something different for our young people, adults have to be willing to show up, even when the conversation is uncomfortable.

So she had the conversation.

By the time she stepped off that train, she knew two things. Our young people needed us, and she needed to be part of the solution.

That decision became Y-KNOT Inc.

In 2018, Regina turned that moment into a nonprofit committed to creating opportunities for under-resourced youth in Prince George's County, Maryland. Y-KNOT began serving students in grades 3 through 12 who had the potential and the drive, but not always equal access to mentors, college preparation, career and workforce development, enrichment opportunities, or simply adults willing to listen, guide, challenge, and believe in them.

Why Y-KNOT?

The name grew from a simple question. People asked why a program like this was needed. Regina decided to flip the question.

Why not you?
Why not now?
Why not us?

Replace "why" with "Y-KNOT," and suddenly the question isn't about what's missing. It's about what's possible.

Years later, that is still the heart of Y-KNOT Inc.

We don't just ask why. We ask Y-KNOT.

Our Mission

Empowering the Next Generation

We provide mentorship, leadership development, and life skills programs that equip young people to thrive.

Our Vision

A Future of Empowered Youth

We envision a world where empowered youth, driven by curiosity, confidence, and a belief in their own potential, pursue transformative pathways that lead to education, opportunity, and prosperity. Our motto: Replace “WHY” with “Y-KNOT” and open up new possibilities!

What Y-KNOT Means

Y-KNOT is more than a name. It is a question and a commitment wrapped into one.

Why not invest in our young people before the world convinces them they are less than they are? Why not show up for children who need guidance, structure, and someone in their corner? Why not be the solution?

Y-KNOT stands for Knowledge, Nurturing, Opportunities, and Teaching: the four pillars that anchor everything we do. These are not just words; they are the intentional framework through which we design every program, build every relationship, and measure every outcome.

Together, these four pillars form the K.N.O.T., the tie that binds our community, our youth, and our mission together.

Our Impact

Since our first program launched in October 2018 at Apple Grove Elementary School, Y-KNOT Inc. has grown from a single school partnership into a multi-state youth development organization with a reach that continues to expand.

What we have accomplished

  • 600+youth served annually across Prince George's County, MD and Cumberland County, NJ
  • 23school partnerships and counting, with programming embedded directly in school communities
  • 15programs spanning mentoring, college preparation, workforce readiness, social-emotional learning, and enrichment
  • 500+participants served through our Mobile Prom Boutique, which has grown from a single-site event to a multi-stop experience across New Jersey, Maryland, and Virginia
  • 410youth reached through the 2026 Mobile Prom Boutique season alone
  • A college tour program that has opened doors for students who have never seen a college campus
  • A Parent Power Series that extends our reach beyond youth to strengthen the families surrounding them
  • Enrichment clubs, academies, and 12-week social-emotional learning curricula designed to meet young people exactly where they are

From our first Prom Boutique serving 4 participants in 2019 to a movement that now touches thousands of lives across two states, Y-KNOT’s growth is a testament to what happens when a community decides our children are worth the investment.

A Note from Our Founder

I never planned to start a nonprofit. I planned to mind my business on a train ride.

But when I overheard a group of young girls barely ten years old having a conversation that made the adults around them look away in disgust, I couldn’t do it. I couldn’t look away. I sat down and I talked to them. And what I found beneath all that noise were children who simply needed someone to care enough to show up.

That moment changed everything for me. I realized I couldn’t keep waiting for someone else to be the solution. So, in 2018, Y-KNOT was born out of one conversation, on one train ride, with a heart full of “why not?”

Eight years later, we are serving 600+ young people across two states, running 15 programs, and still rooted in that same belief that started it all: our children deserve adults who choose them, every single day.

I am honored to be one of those adults. And I am grateful you are here.

Our Future

Where Y-KNOT goes next.

Y-KNOT Inc. was founded on the belief that no child should be left to navigate this world alone. That belief has never changed, and neither has our hunger to do more.

As we look ahead, Y-KNOT is committed to deepening our impact and expanding our reach in the communities that need us most. Our vision for the future includes:

  • Expanding our school partnerships

Across Prince George's County, MD and Cumberland County, NJ, so that more young people have consistent access to mentoring, academic support, and social-emotional programming.

  • Scaling BRIDGE and Blueprint: Build Your Future

Our newest signature programs, designed to prepare youth for college and careers with real skills, real exposure, and real pathways.

  • Growing our Mobile Prom Boutique into new markets

So that every young person, regardless of economic circumstances, can experience the joy and dignity of their milestone moments.

  • Strengthening our parent and family programming

Through the Parent Power Series, because we know that youth thrive when the adults around them are supported too.

  • Building sustainable funding partnerships

That allow us to deepen the quality of our programs and invest in the staff, resources, and infrastructure our youth deserve.

Y-KNOT is not just an organization. It is a movement rooted in love, driven by purpose, and committed to the long game of youth development.

Our children did not choose the circumstances they were born into. But they do deserve adults who choose them, every single day.

We are just getting started.
