Mandatory Reporting Protocol – Maryland

If a mentee shares information or you suspect abuse, neglect, or danger:

 Stay Calm and Listen Let the mentee speak freely.

• • Avoid expressing shock or judgment.
  • Thank them for trusting you.

2. Do Not Promise Secrecy

• • Explain that you are required by law to report the information to help protect them.

3. Contact the Director of Mentoring Immediately

• • As soon as you suspect abuse, neglect, or danger, you must contact the Director of Mentoring.
  • This step is required before taking any further action.

4. Complete the Mandated Reporter Form

• • After notifying the Director, complete the internal Mandated Reporter Form to document the concern.
  • This form ensures accurate internal tracking and supports the official reporting process.

Examples of Reportable Abuse or Neglect
Recognizing signs of abuse or neglect is critical. Below are examples of situations that must be reported:

Physical Abuse

• • Unexplained bruises, burns, or fractures
  • Reports of being hit, kicked, or shaken
  • Fear of going home or fear of a specific adult

Sexual Abuse

• • Inappropriate sexual knowledge or behavior
  • Disclosure of sexual contact or exploitation
  • Physical signs such as pain, bleeding, or STIs

Emotional Abuse

• • Constant criticism, threats, or rejection
  • Extreme withdrawal, anxiety, or aggression
  • Developmental delays without medical cause

Neglect

• • Consistent lack of food, clothing, or hygiene
  • Unattended medical or dental needs
  • Frequent absences from school or lack of supervision

Note: Even if you’re unsure, you are still required to report any reasonable suspicion. You do not need proof.
